Planning for the New Year

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope that everyone’s new year is off to a great start, but I know this can be a tough time – especially for us triathletes. It’s cold. The last thing you want to do is go out for a run, put on a swimsuit, or god forbid go for a bike ride. You are in the middle of the dark tunnel of the off-season. It’s been just as long since your last tri as it will be until your next. Simply put, it’s hard to stay motivated.

I am right there with you.

But, do not despair. This happens every year. Just know that this feeling will come and go with the seasons and do your best to keep moving.

One thing that might help you get your rear in gear (at least it helps me) is to create a race calendar and start to plan your New Year of races. This can also prove to be a money saver because you will be aware of all the early registration dates – usually saving anywhere from $5-20 per race, just for registering early!

So where to start?

First, list out all the races you are definitely interested in doing, just the names will do to start. Then look for new local races – ones that you may not have heard of before. Check out the websites of your local running stores and timing companies for lists of races. I usually check out:

It’s up to you how much information to include. I like to make sure I have the name, date, distance/type of race, location, early registration date, early registration price, regular registration price, and a link to the race website.

And if you live in Winston-Salem, or anywhere in or around North Carolina… you are in luck! You can click the image below to download my calendar of just about every “local” 2014 triathlon I could find.

Race Calendar

Note: This calendar only includes tris, including running only events would make it MUCH longer! Also, just because a race is on my calendar, doesn’t mean I intend to do it. I’ll keep you updated as I register for and complete races this year!
